The WAND Foundation is a registered non-profit organization led by a group of professional women dedicated to improving the lives of the less fortunate through meaningful, sustainable activities. We work strategically through partnerships with communities, private institutions, and the government to create meaningful, sustainable improvements in the lives of disadvantaged children and adults. Assistance is given in the form of medical, educational, accommodation, nutrition, and extracurricular activities, regardless of race, gender, or religion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Brief History<\/h4>\n

The WAND Foundation was incorporated on October 5th, 2000, with a mission of service to the most vulnerable citizens and groups. It was founded by Simone de la Bastide, April Bermudez, Jan Ryan, and Penny Elias in March 1998<\/span> to realize a dream of creating an extraordinary women\u2019s charitable organization.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>WAND began its work from humble beginnings both at the level of Fundraising and seeking and implementing worthy Projects. In the early days the committee concentrated on one small project at a time and each member worked at bringing in funds to cover project costs.\u00a0 Work was also done on sourcing products and gifts to support fundraisers in response to the needs of a project or projects. We learnt as we went along and gained experience, based on which, we later brought new focus to the organization.<\/span><\/p>\n

WAND grew at a rapid rate and was able to access international donations and raise funds locally. WAND continues to look for worthy projects across Trinidad and Tobago.\u00a0 We have aligned ourselves with other Charitable Organisations, the Diplomatic Corp and Philanthropy; Corporate and private citizens, and the Interclub of Trinidad & Tobago, a group of 20 NGO\u2019s performing and responding to similar needs.<\/span><\/p>\n

A humbling experience for WAND was receiving the \u201c<\/span>National Award for Community Service Gold<\/b>\u2019 conferred at Trinidad & Tobago\u2019s Independence Award Ceremony on 31<\/span>st<\/span> August 2014<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/b>Mona Khan, President at the time, and<\/span> Jan Bocas Ryan<\/span>,<\/b> Secretary, attended the Ceremony on behalf of the Organization.\u00a0 In the same year, WAND received the \u201c<\/span>Faith Wiltshire Award<\/b>\u201d for Community Service.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our MISSION is to enable personal empowerment and increased self-esteem through skills training programs. We focus on those marginalized by poverty, gender, unemployment, and those who are physically and mentally challenged. We strive to improve the quality of life and living conditions of those suffering from severe poverty and destitution, while ensuring that our requests\/projects are environmentally conscious. We also assist individuals in need of specialized health care that will improve the quality of their life.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Amanda with a BSc in Business Administration and MBA with a major in Marketing, held various positions both in Trinidad & Tobago and the UK corporate world. In 2007 she established\u00a0 her own company Image Matters Ltd. which has grown to be one of the region\u2019s most reputable marketing and event companies. With her experience she lectured at the Arthur Lok Jack Global School of Business on event management, etiquette and protocol and also conducts her own corporate sessions.<\/span><\/p>\n

She served on the Board of the Media Complaints Council of Trinidad & Tobago in 2016\/2018 and is currently on the ANSA McAL Foundation Board. One of her notable moments was representing Trinidad and Tobago at an International Pageant in 1998.<\/span><\/p>\n

Known as an \u2018achiever\u2019 she agreed to join WAND in 2022 so that she can use her skill set helping others, maximizing her reach with their established following. \u201cTrue success is not measured by personal achievements alone, but by the positive impact you have on others along the way\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leah has a BSc in Industrial Engineering from The University of The West Indies. Over the past 25 years she has worked on technical teams in a variety of industries including HVAC, project management, industrial gases, construction equipment, power generation and even consumer goods.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since taking a hiatus from employment in the public sector in 2006, she offers technical and operational support to a local agro-processing operation in Freeport.\u00a0 Through her portfolio in Freeport she is able to interact with many in need and try to positively impact the lives of many passing through.\u00a0 This builds on the examples set by her parents (both educators) whom she shadowed as they served the communities in which they worked and lived.<\/span><\/p>\n

Joining WAND in 2022 perfectly coincided with her schedule relaxing.\u00a0 Leah believes that WAND offers a platform to help effect change on a greater scale in Trinidad and Tobago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lisa is a Spanish teacher by profession . She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree , majoring in Spanish and French and a Masters Degree\u00a0 in Education. She has taught Spanish for 11 years at St Joseph’s Convent\u00a0 , St Joseph forms 1-6 then continued her teaching career at the International School of Port- of Spain , teaching Spanish at the Middle\u00a0 and High\u00a0 school level . Lisa remains passionate about education and learning and has served on several education committees and pioneered projects in the field of curriculum design . She is the proud mother of 2 girls and enjoys family time, cooking , entertaining and helping the less fortunate. She is delighted to serve on the board of WAND as its secretary .Lisa holds as her mantra ” not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lorraine Ferguson is the Chief Operating Officer-Finance, IT and Administration at the Kenson Group of Companies where she is also a Director.<\/p>\n

Lorraine has a varied range of work experience from large multinational corporations to a locally owned and operated entrepreneurial organization. She completed her undergraduate degree in Information Systems Management in Washington, DC and subsequently completed her MSc in Computer Science at Pace University, New York.<\/p>\n

She started her career at the New York Stock Exchange where she worked on a key project in the historic transformation of the New York Stock Exchange from a manual auction system to a highly automated trading system (Hybrid Market).\u00a0 She then assumed the position of Lead Application Developer at Kellogg Capital Markets Ltd. before moving on to Citigroup where she was the Head of Solution Architecture for the Institutional Client Group.<\/p>\n

In 2015 she returned to Trinidad to take up the position of General Manager at CWD Enterprises Ltd., the manufacturing subsidiary of the Kenson Group of Companies gaining significant operational, financial, marketing and HR and IR experience. In 2018 she took up the position of Chief Operating Officer-Finance, IT and Administration with the Kenson Group of Companies. Since then, she has played a lead role in the restructuring of the Group, in the implementation of modern Technology Platforms and in the optimization of it\u2019s Governance Systems and Procedures. This work, combined with her 15 years\u2019 experience in the Financial Technology industry, led her to be nominated to the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago where she has served since 2019.<\/p>\n

Lorraine is passionate about animal welfare, especially wild birds and she owns two sun conures. She is also an avid collector of wine and art. She is certified by the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 2 and is currently pursuing Level 3.<\/p>\n

Chelsea John is an attorney-at-law, called to the Bar of England and Wales and Trinidad and Tobago. After qualifying as a Barrister in the United Kingdom, Chelsea retuned to Trinidad\u00a0 where she was called to the Bar and entered Chambers. Since 2016 she has maintained a practice in a variety of areas including criminal and civil litigation, family, corporate and\u00a0 commercial and probate. Though litigation is her passion she also enjoys the non-contentious areas of practice.<\/span><\/p>\n

Subsequent to qualifying as a Barrister in 2015, Chelsea\u00a0 also became an ADRgroup Accredited Civil and Commercial Mediator after successfully\u00a0 completing \u00a0 a course in alternative dispute resolution.<\/span><\/p>\n

Prior to becoming an Attorney -at-Law, Chelsea obtained a Bachelor of Commerce with a Major in Law in Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside of law Chelsea has a passion for cooking and baking and enjoys running and travelling as hobbies.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chelsea is proud to be the youngest serving member on the WAND Board and looks forward to making a wholesome contribution to the Board and to all the charitable endeavours of WAND.\u00a0 Chelsea is committed to service of others and making a positive change and believes that a lot can be achieved by working together towards a common purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tricia has a BSc in Economics and Accounting from the University of the West Indies, Cave<\/span> Hill Campus, and a Masters in Finance from the Arthur Lok Jack Global School of Business.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tricia has spent her professional career in finance both at the level of private consultant and<\/span> then held supervisory and management positions in the banking industry initially at First<\/span> Citizens and then at Scotiabank Trinidad and Tobago.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tricia made the difficult decision to stay at home, and focus on parenting her two<\/span> daughters, when her second daughter was born in 2007. This decision permitted her to<\/span> participate fully at the Parent Teacher level at the schools which her daughters attended. At<\/span> St. Andrews Primary School, Tricia served as a class representative for several years, and as<\/span><\/p>\n

the PTA Secretary for two (2) years. At St Joseph\u2019s Convent POS, Tricia became a Class Rep<\/span> Coordinator, part of a two (2) member team, which successfully introduced the class<\/span> representative system for parents, and she was also a member of a small group of parents<\/span> who raised the necessary funds to fully renovate and equip the school\u2019s chemistry<\/span><\/p>\n

laboratory. Tricia is currently a member of the Parent Support Group which is the main<\/span> fundraising committee, established to raise funds to assist with costs associated with<\/span> operating St Joseph\u2019s Convent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tricia has a keen interest in community service, and believes in committing her time and<\/span> energy to any venture which would positively contribute to the lives of the less fortunate or<\/span> the betterment of society as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Sabita Harrikissoon is a product of the Naparima Girls\u2019 High School and graduated top of her class from the School of Dentistry, University of the West Indies in July 2001receiving a medal in Oral Surgery and a commendation in Child Dental Health.<\/span><\/p>\n

In July 2002 Dr. Harrikissoon was admitted to practice as a Dental Surgeon and has her own Dental Practice, Dental Designs Limited at Wellness House in Cocoyea.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2006 she was appointed to the Executive of the Naparima Girls\u2019 Alumnae and in 2007 an Honorary Game Warden.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Harrikissoon is a former Secretary of the Dental Council of Trinidad and Tobago. In 2013 she was appointed a Director of the Trinidad and Tobago Heart Foundation and Chair of its Go Red for Women campaign dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and control of heart disease in women.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Harrikissoon returned to the School of Dentistry in January 2011 as a part time clinical instructor and facilitator in the Special Needs Dental Clinic providing dental services to children with neurological and developmental challenges including Down\u2019s Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy.<\/span><\/p>\n

In April 2011 Dr. Harrikissoon was appointed President of Soroptimist International San Fernando (SISF) which is a local chapter of Soroptimist International. The latter is a global service organization for women committed to a world where women and girls achieve their individual and collective potential, realize aspirations and ambitions and have an equal voice in creating strong, peaceful communities worldwide; she is also the<\/span><\/p>\n

Chairman of Shangri-La Soroptimist Retirement Home Limited which is the longest standing Club project of SISF.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sabita is a keen Rotary Partner and has received a Paul Harris Fellow from the Rotary Club of San Fernando South (RCSS) which is Rotary\u2019s highest honour; she has for many years led joint Health Outreach projects of SISF and RCSS providing a range of medical screenings for impoverished persons in rural and isolated villages.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Harrikissoon comes from a family with high moral standards and deep spiritual values. As a result of that upbringing she places the highest emphasis on decency, integrity, philanthropy and civic mindedness.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Harrikissoon, who is 47, is married to Mr. Ronnie Bissessar S.C. who is an Attorney at Law and they have a daughter Sveva (16) and a son Seth (9).<\/span><\/p>\n

Pettal John- Beerens is an Attorney-at- Law of approximately twenty-four (24) years\u2019 standing with considerable experience in both the public and private sectors. Her work experience includes international organizations such as the United Nations (FAO), the BG Group and is currently the Deputy Director (Legal) at the Occupational Safety and Health Agency (\u201cOSHA\u201d) having served as Executive Director when required.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She began her career at the Solicitor General\u2019s Department, Ministry of the Attorney General where she provided advice to various Ministries bodies and Departments of the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and successfully represented the Attorney General and various bodies before the High Court and Court of Appeal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ms. John-Beerens has certification, experience and training in mediation, negotiation and corporate governance. As a result, she has served on Boards and various Committees (including Event Committees). She has also been on the panel of judges for Ms. World Trinidad and Tobago and has had some involvement in the fashion industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nation-building is one of Ms. John-Beerens\u2019 primary areas of interest and she has created the \u201cGood Morning Neighbour\u201d Facebook Page geared towards (re-)instilling values surrounding respect in Trinidad and Tobago.<\/span><\/p>\n

Asha Javeed is an award-winning investigative journalist who is now the Lead Editor- Investigations at the Guardian Media Limited. She has authored numerous articles in local and regional publications and provided expert commentary with several regional and international agencies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Her work has influenced policy and practices in corporate governance, public procurement and financial management, financial and energy education, and accountability and justice in the private and public sectors. She is a keen supporter of human rights, and leverages her platforms and skills to support efforts that address domestic violence, regional integration, food security, economic education and equality.<\/span><\/p>\n
